Hey everyone,

We’ve have some updates on our mission to end the breed-specific legislation (BSL) here in Aurora! Here’s what’s been happening:

City Council’s Upcoming Motion

The Aurora City Council is currently working on the wording for a motion that would put the pit bull breed ban on the ballot this year. This is a huge step forward, and the fastest path to repealing this destructive breed ban, but it will not give us much time for our publica awareness campaign! The deadline for the council to push this issue to the ballot is in August, so we’re keeping a close eye on the progress. We can use all the help we can get! Check out our volunteer page if you are interested in being a part of the movement for responsible dog legislation.

Collaboration with Aurora Animal Services

Aurora Animal Services is actively involved in creating this motion. Councilmember Danielle Jurinsky has taken the lead on crafting the bill’s language. We’re optimistic that these efforts will help us get this important issue in front of voters, but we are running short on time. End Aurora BSL will be sending several options of bill language that can be used for the motion.

Contingency Plan for 2025

In the unlikely event that the motion doesn’t pass or the deadline is missed, we have a backup plan. We’re ready to collect petition signatures and craft our own bill for 2025. We’ve already sent some bill options to the city council members to avoid a repeat of 2014, when deceptive wording skewed the vote and led to the ineffective ban being put in place.

Positive Impact of Lifting the Ban

Let’s not forget, in the two years when the ban was lifted, incidents involving pit breeds did not increase. In fact, they decreased overall. With responsible owners having better access to training, socialization, and veterinary care, we expect this trend to continue. Plus, lifting the ban reduced pit bull abandonment, a win-win for everyone.

Community Involvement and Campaign

Last week, End Aurora BSL met to discuss our approach for the upcoming public awareness campaign. We’re forming a new board for our Citizen Action Group and are looking for passionate members to join us. If you’re interested, reach out – we’d love to have you on board!

Support Through Merchandise

To support our cause, we’re launching some awesome new merchandise! Stay tuned, as we’ll be posting these items on our website soon. We are taking donations at https://www.coloradogives.org/story/Endaurorabsl in hopes of getting enough money for a digital awareness and ad campaign, pushing targeted ads to all Aurora Residents with more information on why this legislation will make responsible ownership issues worse.

Thank you all for your continued support. Together, we can make a difference and ensure a safe and fair community for all dogs and their owners in Aurora.

Keep fighting the good fight!
